Issue[]

Premiere Pro produces an error including the text in one of the following:

  • "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Premiere Pro\2.0\DefaultPreset. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel."
  • "Error 1402: Could not open key [key name] ."
  • "Error 1406: Could not write value Folders to key [key name] ."

Possible Solutions[]

This is a problem that Premiere Elements users have reported. I have no idea why it's happening, but here's how to fix it:
1. Open the Windows Registry editor by selecting Start > Run and typing regedit in the Open dialog. Click OK to launch the registry editor.
2. Navigate to the following registry address: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Premiere Pro\2.0\DefaultPreset.
3. Right-click the DefaultPreset key and select Permissions...
4. From the Permissions for DefaultPresets Window, select "System" from the Group or user names and set Permissions to Allow Full Control. Add Full Control to additional Group or user names as appropriate. Click the Apply and OK buttons to save the changes and close the window.
5. Close the Registry Editor.

If no Group or User names are available from the Permissions for DefaultPreset window, Groups or Users for the local system may be added by using the following steps:
1. From the Permissions for DefaultPreset window, click the Add button.
2. The Select Users or Groups window will open. Click the Locations... button and select the computer from the list of available locations. Click OK.
3. From the Select Users and Groups window, click the Advanced... button, then select the Find Now button.
4. A list of users and groups will be listed at the bottom of the screen. Select the appropriate user or group and click the OK button(s).

Now you should be able to uninstall.

You can also do it with other Premiere Pro directories in the same regedit window, if the problem persists.

  • If the above does not work, and the error specifies a certain key:
1. Use the Find tool in the Registry editor to search for the key.
2. If, when you click on the key, a message appears indicating that you have no permission to view the key, right click the key and select "Permissions" as above. You may get a message saying that you have no permission to view permissions, but you may edit them. Proceed anyway.
3. As per the above instructions, add whatever users are required, and assign them full permission.
4. When you press OK, you may be told again that you have no permission to change permissions. If this happens, go back into the "Permissions" dialog, and click the "Advanced" button at the bottom of the window. In the next window that opens, select the "Owner" tab at the top of the window. Users who have permissions associated with the key will appear in a list. Select the user that you are logged on as, and tick the box: "Replace owner on subcontainers and objects". Click "Apply," and you will be told that you have no permission to change the ownership. Dismiss this warning and click "OK". You will be told again that you have no permission, and when you dismiss this box the Owner window will close.
Click the "Advanced" tab again, however, go to the "Owner" tab, and the user you previously selected now has ownership, despite previous warnings. Click "OK" to get all the way out of the permissions windows, and you should now be able to see the contents of the key.

Restart the computer for the changes to take effect, and hopefully Premiere will now also be able to access the key.
